Unified Social Media API vs. Direct Integration

By Mika ReyesPublished 6 min read

The short answer

Integrating directly means your team builds and maintains one integration per platform: its own developer app, app review, OAuth, token refresh and media rules. A unified social media API like Adeli gives you one API for all of them, with the apps and reviews already done. Go direct if social media is your core product. Use a unified API to ship faster and spend your time on your own product.

Integrating directly with each platform's API gives you full control and no per-account fee, but your team owns every developer app, app review, token refresh and API change on every network. A unified social media API like Adeli puts all of those behind one API, so you ship in days and spend engineering time on your own product. This post compares the two for teams building a product, where your customers connect their own accounts.

What's the difference between a unified social media API and direct integration?

Direct integration means you call each platform's own API, through a developer app you register and get approved on each network. A unified social media API is one API that sits in front of many platforms. You call it once, and it calls Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and the rest for you.

The difference shows up in who owns the platform relationship:

Direct integration Unified social media API
Developer apps One per platform, registered by you Held by the unified API provider
App review You pass each platform's review Already done by the provider
Code you write One integration per platform One integration, for every platform
Who your users authorize Your app The provider's approved app

How do direct integration and a unified API compare?

Direct integration costs more time on every row except the platform fee. Here's how they compare on the work a product integration involves:

What you need Going direct With Adeli
Setup time Weeks to months per network, mostly waiting on review Same day: create a key, connect an account, publish
App review Meta App Review, the TikTok audit, LinkedIn's partner review, YouTube's quota audit, each on its own timeline Adeli holds approved apps, so your users connect through them
OAuth and token refresh A different flow and token lifetime per platform Adeli runs the connect flow and refreshes tokens
Platform API changes You track changelogs and deprecations on every network Adeli tracks and ships them
Media handling Each platform's own formats, limits and upload protocol One upload flow; Adeli handles each platform's rules
Errors and logs You build logging for every provider Per-platform status on every publish; Adeli logs every platform call
Support Platform forums and bug tools A person at hello@tryadeli.com
YouTube quota 100 uploads a day per project until you pass Google's audit Adeli's YouTube app already passed it
Cost No per-account fee; you pay in engineering time Free to start; grows with your customers, not your posts

What do you get by integrating directly?

The biggest benefit of direct integration is that there's no per-account fee: each platform's API is free to call, apart from X. The other benefits:

  • Every endpoint, the day it ships. You can use a new platform feature as soon as the platform releases it, without waiting for a unified API to wrap it.
  • Your app's name on the consent screen. Your users authorize your own developer app, so the platform's permission screen names your product.
  • No third-party dependency. There's no vendor between your product and the platform, so there's no extra contract or outage to plan for.
  • Your own platform relationship. Your app gets its own rate-limit budget, and you can apply to the platform's partner programs yourself.
  • Full control of retries and edge cases. You decide how to handle every error code, and you see the raw platform response.

These matter most when social media is the product itself, not one feature in it.

What does going direct actually cost?

Going direct is free to call but expensive to build and keep running. The platform fee is zero on most networks. The cost shows up in four other places:

  • Engineering weeks per network. Each platform has its own OAuth flow, token lifetime, media upload protocol, error codes and rate limits. Instagram alone has two API versions with different logins.
  • Review rounds. Meta App Review takes about a week per round, and a rejection starts the clock again. LinkedIn's partner review and YouTube's quota audit often take months. Our review times by platform covers each one.
  • Ongoing maintenance. Platforms version and deprecate their APIs on their own schedules. Someone on your team has to watch every changelog and ship the fixes.
  • X's API fees. X is pay-per-use, so posting through it costs money whether you go direct or not.

YouTube's quota is the hidden limit. Google's YouTube Data API overview says a project starts with a default allocation of 100 videos.insert calls a day, plus 10,000 units for everything else. That's 100 uploads a day across all of your users. Going past it means applying through the YouTube API Services audit and quota extension.

What does a unified social media and ads API give you?

A unified API gives you every platform's approvals, auth and upkeep through one integration, so your team spends its time on your own product. What Adeli takes off your plate:

  • No app reviews. Adeli holds the developer app on every supported network and has already passed each platform's review. You skip the back-and-forth with reviewers and ship on day one.
  • No auth or token refresh code. Adeli runs the OAuth connect flow for each platform, stores the tokens, and refreshes them before they expire.
  • Platform changes tracked for you. When Meta, TikTok or Google changes an API, Adeli ships the change. Your integration doesn't move.
  • Status, logs and support. Every publish returns a per-platform status, so one network failing never blocks the others. Adeli logs every call it makes to a platform, with the status, latency and the platform's error code, so when a post fails, support can tell you exactly why. A person answers at hello@tryadeli.com.
  • Higher YouTube quota. Adeli's YouTube app passed the YouTube API Services audit and is approved for higher quota tiers, so you don't apply for a quota extension yourself.
  • Media handled per platform. You upload a file once. Adeli checks its real format (never trusting the file name), converts images where a platform requires it, such as JPEG for TikTok photo posts, and sends video through each platform's own upload protocol, including YouTube's resumable upload and Instagram's container processing.
  • Ads on the same key. Adeli manages ad accounts and campaigns, tracks results and pulls leads on Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn, through the ads API.

Adeli's apps already run at production volume across many customers. See the posting API for the networks and post types it covers.

Don't per-post fees make a unified API expensive at scale?

Per-post fees add up, which is why Adeli doesn't charge them. Adeli's price follows the number of customers you serve, not how often they post, and it's free to start. The one exception is X, which charges for its own API whether you go direct or not. Current plans are on the pricing page.

Your bill grows with your customer count, the same way you probably bill your own customers, not with how often they post.

When should you integrate directly?

Integrate directly when social media is your core product and you have engineers to own each integration long term. Go direct if:

  • Your product depends on platform features no unified API covers yet, and you need them the day they launch.
  • You're integrating one network, deeply, and don't plan to add more.
  • You need your own name on the consent screen, or your own partner status with a platform.
  • You have the runway to wait through Meta App Review, the TikTok audit and LinkedIn's partner review before launch.

When should you use a unified social media API?

Use a unified social media API if you care about building the best product for your users and want to spend less time on integrations. It fits when:

  • Social media and ads are features of your product, not the product itself: a marketing platform, an AI content tool, or vertical SaaS.
  • You need several networks, such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, and don't want several integrations.
  • You need to ship this quarter, not after months in review queues.
  • You'd rather your engineers build what makes your product different than maintain token refresh on seven platforms.

If that's you, the AI marketing platforms use case shows how teams like yours use Adeli.

Frequently asked questions

Is a unified social media API more expensive than going direct at scale?

It depends on how the unified API bills. Per-post pricing grows with every post your users publish. Adeli doesn't charge per post: its price follows the number of customers you serve, and it's free to start. X is the exception on any route, because X charges for its own API.

Can I start on a unified API and move to direct integrations later?

Yes. Keep the unified API behind your own small interface (one function per action, such as publish or list comments) so a later switch touches one module. You'd still need your own developer apps and app reviews before switching, so start those early if you plan to move.

Does a unified API limit which platform features I can use?

Sometimes. A unified API covers the endpoints it has built, and a brand new platform feature may not be wrapped on day one. Check the unified API's docs for the specific features you need (Reels, Stories, comments, ads) before you commit.

Do I still need my own developer app on each platform with a unified API?

Not with Adeli. Adeli holds the developer app on every supported network and has already passed each platform's review, so your users connect their accounts through Adeli's approved apps and you hold one API key.
